Overview: EBP107 — Assessment 3
This guide supports your Assessment 3: Journal Article Evaluation. You will critically appraise a research article using a structured critical appraisal tool and write an academic essay that evaluates how well the study was conducted and why its findings matter for Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).
Welcome & Purpose
This guide will help you:
	- Choose one article from the approved Assessment Readings list.
- Use an appropriate critical appraisal tool (e.g., CASP, JBI, or CEBM) to assess study quality.
- Write an essay that explains what the study found, how trustworthy it is, and how it contributes to clinical or professional practice.
By following this guide, you will be able to:
	- Identify major health research designs (RCT, case–control, cohort, systematic review, qualitative).
- Apply a critical appraisal checklist to assess research quality and rigour.
- Explain results and sources of bias in clear academic language.
- Write a well-structured, referenced essay using APA 7th edition.
Throughout this guide, you will also strengthen your ability to recognise study designs and evidence hierarchies, locate and evaluate peer-reviewed research, apply appraisal tools effectively.
Why This Matters
These skills are the foundation of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) — making healthcare decisions based on the best available research evidence. You’ll demonstrate that you can interpret and appraise evidence, apply structured critical thinking, and communicate findings effectively.
What You Need to Do
	- Select your article  You must select one article from the Assessment Readings folder in the Reading List.
You may reuse your Assessment 2 article or choose a different one.
Do not use an article outside the list—this will result in a resubmission or zero marks.
- Identify the study type & choose your tool — determine the design and use the matching checklist (CASP, JBI, CEBM, or EQUATOR). Include the completed checklist as an appendix.
- Write your 1,500-word essay with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Refer to your appraisal tool throughout, provide a referenced definition of EBP, discuss practice implications, and use additional scholarly sources to support your evaluation.
- Submit via MyLearn by the due date (Sunday of Week 10, Module 5.2), including your appendix.
