Benchmarking Research Impact

Benchmarking research impact is an essential process for researchers and research institutions. Benchmarking not only aids in understanding where an individual stands in their research field but can provide an invaluable aid in targeting future collaborations and provide invaluable support when applying for research funding.

Bibliometrics can assist in benchmarking the research performance against other comparable individuals, research centres or institutions. It is important however, when using bibliometrics, to ensure that like is compared with like, Comparisons can be attained for individuals, research groups and countries within specific fields of research to accurately compare research metrics, including citation averages, field weighted citation impact and H indexes.   

There are a number of bibliometric tools that can be used for benchmarking.  Torrens University uses Scival, Scopus and Scimago.
