Building a Research Profile

As a researcher, it is important to build a strong research profile, to build both recognition and reputation in your chosen fields of research.  A well established and managed research profile will potentially enable greater opportunities for collaboration, citation and research funding.  Below are some key steps each researcher should take to develop and maintain their research profile.

  1.  Set up your ORCiD profile.

  2.  Develop a social media presence; networking beyond academic circles allows your research to have a wider impact.  Researchers use Twitter and LinkedIn to strategically share research and connect with others in the field.  If you use Twitter, make sure you post regularly about your research and comment on other research in your field to build an engagement.

  3. Use SciVal  to identify the researchers working in your discipline, and connect with them on social media.  Contact the Library Research team to show you how to use Scival to monitor and follow researchers in your field.

  4. Get involved at conferences.  Presenting at conferences is an opportunity for receiving feedback and developing your research.  Ensure the conferences you attend are of national or international significance and take the opportunity to network with other researchers.

  5. Update and maintain your Pure Profile.  Your Pure Profile is an external facing page, which highlights your research.  Your profile lists all your research outputs, including up to date metrics and Altmetrics.  You can edit your profile, post links to research events and describe your research.  The Pure Profile links directly to your ORCiD, enabling the data in both profiles to be matched.
