Bibliometrics

Bibliometrics are proxy measures of research performance, providing a method to quantify the value of research output, of collaborations, and the productivity of a researcher compared to others at a similar stage of career.  These metrics are measures of research impact but do not necessarily provide an indicator of research quality.

Bibliometrics utilises a number of objective measures:

  • number of publications
  • number of cited publications
  • number of times a citation has been cited
  • H-index
  • Journal impact factors
  • Field-weighted impact

The underlying assumption of Bibliometrics is that the influence or impact of the research can be measured by the number of times a work is engaged with.
