Resources for your subject

Key points

  • Resources selected for your subject must be accessible to all students, including online students
  • Not all print books are published in ebook format
  • Not all ebooks are available to libraries
  • Work with your Librarian to locate appropriate resources for your subject

The Library is not purchasing new print at this time.

If using readings from a print book it is possible to scan a chapter to upload to Blackboard.

  • No more than 10% of any book may be used (see Copyright restrictions)
  • The 10% rule applies when the same text is used across multiple subjects - ensure that the text is not used elsewhere.
  • Scanning guidelines must be followed to ensure accessibility for students with print disabilities.

Documents scanned and uploaded to Blackboard must follow the Digitising Resources Guidelines to ensure they are accessible to students with print disabilities.

When using websites in your subject you will need to consider:

  • Websites change frequently and your subject could end up full of dead links
  • All content used in your subject, including web content, needs to be credible and authoritative
  • Use the Resource Evaluation Checklist below to assess the suitability of a resource
  • Documents on the internet should be linked to, rather than downloaded as PDFs and then uploaded to BlackBoard.

Do not use any images (photographs, drawings, illustrations from books, charts, etc.) without consideration of copyright, and always ensure all images are attributed (minimum URL of source attached, preferably full APA references provided). Stock photos should, at a minimum, have a small text box attached, e.g. Source: Shutterstock.

The Educational Statutory Licence allows Torrens University to copy and communicate images from both print and digital sources, for educational purposes, within BlackBoard. However, the University must be able to provide accurate recordkeeping of all copyright works used under the licence, for when the institution is regularly audited by the Copyright Agency.

For this reason, subject writers are strongly encouraged to use only images that are out of copyright (public domain), licensed under stock photo contracts, or Creative Commons, or similar terms of use that allow reproduction for educational use.
