Guidelines for Using AI in Assessments

Check with your Learning Facilitator if you are permitted to use AI tools in your assessment. Rules may be different depending on the subject, assessment task and course you are studying. If the use of AI is permitted, make sure you are referencing AI appropriately.

Ethical Considerations

You should consider several things before using AI tools and the information they generate, including:

  • Ethics - There are many ethical considerations when using AI tools. Be sure to apply Australia’s AI Ethics Principles when using these tools.
  • Privacy - Consider whether the information you are providing to the AI tool would be considered private or personal information to yourself or others. Any information you enter into AI tools may be shared with third parties, so it is best to keep your input anonymous whenever possible. Refer to the Torrens Privacy Policy for further advice.
  • Environmental impact - Studies suggest that AI tools have a negative impact on the environment due to their resource-intensive use of information and communications technology. Consider your environmental footprint each time you use an AI tool.
  • Constant development - Keep in mind that AI is constantly evolving. Suitable advice for its use today may no longer apply tomorrow. Stay up to date with What’s New in Generative AI.
