About the Statement

What is the Statement of Acknowledgement for AI Tool Use?
It’s a formal declaration that recognises when AI tools are used in academic work. It promotes transparency, academic integrity, and ethical use of Gen AI tools.

Why does the Statement matter?
Acknowledging AI use fosters openness, reinforces integrity, and shows how AI contributed to your work.

How does the Statement relate to academic integrity?
It ensures AI use is transparent and that your final submission reflects your own critical thinking and analysis.

Which Gen AI tools are covered?
All AI tools used in academic work, including those for drafting, grammar checks, summarising, code generation, slide creation, and more.

When and How to Use the Statement

When should I use the Statement?
When the AI tools have been allowed to be used include it in any work where AI tools have been used — reports, essays, videos, presentations, podcasts, or code.

When do I have to start using it?
Encouraged now (Trimester 3, 2025). Required from Trimester 1, 2026.

How do I use the Statement?
Add it as an appendix (like a reference list) with:

  • Name of the AI tool

  • Brief description of how it was used

  • Confirmation the final work is your own thoughts and analysis

Template:

I acknowledge that I have used the following AI tool(s) in the creation of this [insert type of output, e.g. “presentation”, “report”, “activity”, etc]:

  • [Name of AI Tool]: [Brief description of how the tool was used]

I confirm that the use of the AI tool(s) has been in accordance with the [insert institution’s name] Academic Integrity Policy and TUA, Think and MDS’s Position Paper on the use of AI. I confirm that the final output is authored by me and represents my own thoughts and critical analysis. I take full responsibility for the final content of this [insert type of output, e.g. “presentation”, “report”, “activity”, etc.

Where should I put the Statement in my work?
Place the Statement immediately before the reference list.

  • If your assessment does not require a reference list, include the Statement at the end of your work.

What about group assessments?

  • If your group submits one piece of work together, include a joint Statement of Acknowledgement signed by all members.

  • If the group task requires individual submissions, each student must include their own separate Statement.

This ensures transparency about AI tool use, whether the work is joint or individual.

What if I haven’t used AI tools?
No need to include the Statement.

Do I need to include screenshots of prompts?
Check with your learning facilitator — requirements may vary by assessment.

Can I use AI tools to create a Reference List?
No — this is discouraged. Use Mendeley instead.

Guidance on Using AI Tools

When can I use AI tools?
Only when permitted for your subject or assessment. Always confirm with your facilitator.

Where can I find help?
See the Library’s GenAI page or ask your learning facilitator. Staff can contact the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Scholarship.

What happens if I don’t acknowledge AI use?
Your facilitator may ask for clarification. If your work doesn’t reflect your own thinking, it will be treated under the Academic Integrity Policy.

Special Cases

Do HDR students need to use the Statement?
Yes — for coursework assessments. For theses, you’ll make an equivalent integrity declaration.

For Staff

Do staff need to use the Statement?
No. But you must follow institutional policy, model good practice, and encourage responsible AI use.

As a facilitator, what if a student doesn’t include the Statement?
Seek clarification and educate them. At this stage, no penalties apply.

As a facilitator, what if a student’s work doesn’t seem their own?
Follow the Academic Integrity Policy and take appropriate action.
